Thammasat University – Tha Phra Chan Campus 🩵💛

Thammasat’s original and historic campus is located on Rattanakosin Island in Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok—nestled right along the east bank of the Chao Phraya River. The campus and surrounding pier (Tha Phra Chan – "Moon Pier") forms a lively cultural and commercial district with markets, bookstores, restaurants, and amulet stalls
Established in 1934, this was Thammasat University’s first site and remains iconic, especially the Dome building which once housed Pridi Banomyong’s office and served as the Free Thai Movement headquarters during WWII. It houses the Faculty of Law, political science, economics, commerce, liberal arts, social administration, journalism and sociology — primarily offering postgraduate, integrated, and international programmes here today
Pridi Banomyong Library: an underground riverside library with over a million titles and study spaces across three basement levels, specializing in multidisciplinary collections and ASEAN studies. Sanya Dhammasakti Library: Thailand’s largest law library located within the Faculty of Law building, offering international law journals and Supreme Court archives. Campus also includes sports areas, cafeterias, gardens like Jing Nong and Lan Pho, and a historic sculpture memorial to the 6 October 1976 events.
In 2023, the campus received a Thai Tourism Award in the category of Historical and Cultural Attractions, affirming its value as a public venue for learning and heritage — with renovations underway to enhance visitor access by 2025. Given its riverside setting, the university actively manages flood risks through water level monitoring and adaptation strategies that also consider the local community’s safety
