Wat Chedi Luang (วัดเจดีย์หลวงวรวิหาร เชียงใหม่) , Chiang Mai Thailand

Wat Chedi Luang is a prominent Buddhist temple located in the heart of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Its full name is Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara (วัดเจดีย์หลวงวรวิหาร), and it is one of the most historically significant temples in the city. Here are some key details about Wat Chedi Luang:

History: The temple was built in the late 14th century, around 1391, during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma. It was originally much taller, standing at around 82 meters (approximately 269 feet), making it one of the tallest structures in ancient Chiang Mai.
Destruction: In 1545, an earthquake severely damaged the chedi (stupa) of the temple, causing it to lose a significant portion of its height. The chedi was never fully restored to its original height, and it remains a partially ruined structure to this day.
Emerald Buddha: For a period, the temple housed the famous Emerald Buddha, one of Thailand's most revered religious icons. However, the statue was moved to Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok during the 16th century and now resides in the Grand Palace.

City Pillar: Wat Chedi Luang also once housed the city pillar of Chiang Mai, which was believed to protect the city. However, the city pillar was relocated to a different site, and a replica now stands within the temple grounds.
Architectural Style: The temple showcases a mix of Lanna and classical Thai architectural styles. The chedi features a distinctive square-shaped base, which is characteristic of Lanna-style stupas.
Monastic Complex: In addition to the chedi, Wat Chedi Luang includes various other buildings, such as viharns (assembly halls), kutis (monks' living quarters), and other smaller structures.

Current Use: Today, Wat Chedi Luang remains an active Buddhist temple, and it is a popular destination for both tourists and local worshippers. It's a site of religious significance, and it hosts various ceremonies and festivals throughout the year.
Restoration Efforts: Efforts have been made over the years to restore and preserve the temple complex. Some of the structures, such as the city pillar replica and a viharn, have been rebuilt.
